Significant photography
OI became aware of this photograph only a few days ago, through something as banal as instagram. Still it was significant and shocking the emotions transmitted through this shot. I am struck by how counterproductive the perceived emotions are.
It is important to me from a political point of view, where being of somewhat distant generations I recognize the role of Gladys Marín in Chilean politics, who put her arms at the disposal of the people, making a space for herself in this extremely manly world, ruled by oblivion. In addition to the emotions present, one must recognize the compositional success of the photograph, that expressive point in the midst of a sea of cameras.
The photograph is dated October 1998 by Ximena Navarro in court when Gladys Marín was told that the dictator Augusto Pinochet had been arrested in London on charges of systematic violation of human rights. I find this mixture of rage, hope, pain and disgust in the same face shocking.
